Wanderings: Thomas Hart Benton’s America
January 12 – March 19, 2017
This exhibition presents nineteen lithographs by American regionalist Thomas Hart Benton from the 1930s and 1940s. The prints feature images of rural life in the America, and were distributed throughout the nation by the American Artists Association (AAA).
Throughout the fall 2016 semester, students enrolled in associate professor of American art history Sascha Scott’s courses HOA498 Art History Senior Seminar and HOA655 Proseminar in Graduate Research Methods and Scholarly Writing, a course offered in the Department of Art & Music Histories aimed at professionalizing students’ research, writing, and presentation skills, worked with Scott and David Prince, associate director and curator of collections at SUArt Galleries on the research and development of the exhibition. In addition, the students have been working with the AAA’s papers, held by SU’s Special Collections and Research Center, to explore the organization’s publication and distribution records.
