TODD WEBB: Photographs of England and France 1948 – 1975

January-August 2004

Todd Webb was a photographer who was able to compose and light a picture in a manner that, as Alfred Stieglitz once remarked, visualized the artist’s tenderness without sentimentality.  This exhibition examined photographs Webb made of England and France in 1948 and again from 1971 when he lived in France and later, in Bath, England.  His approach and subjects: architectural details, quiet landscapes, and cityscapes remained remarkably consistent given the twenty-five year interval between his visits.
