Pursuit of the Exotic: Artists Abroad in 19th Century Egypt and the Holy Land
February 26 – April 28, 2010
Artists who traveled have provided us with personal records of places we may never see directly or would know better if we could visit. Visually documenting exotic cultures transformed itself in the 19th century from the work of isolated, often amateur, sightseers with sketchbooks to that of the trained, professional, and surely adventurous artist. This exhibition celebrated those artists who helped rediscover Egypt and the Holy Land — known in the 19th century as the Orient — cultures known only sporadically or through literary accounts before 1800.
