Artist Statement

“What’s Going On Down There?” is a song written my Malvina Reynolds in 1964 about Freedom Summer in Mississippi, including the murders of three civil rights workers. This summer in Ferguson, Missouri, the shooting of Mike Brown, subsequent protests, and the police response to these events recall a sad history. The footage used in this video was posted online by both professionals and amateur media makers. Malvinas is a art/rock/noise/punk/riot grrrl/jamboree/feminist band and collective inspired by the work of Malvina Reynolds. We aim to connect the history of social justice movements to the present.
