2017 Wynn Newhouse Awards
April 23 through June 7, 2018
Louise and Bernard Palitz Gallery
The annual Wynn Newhouse Awards exhibition runs April 23 through June 7 at the Palitz Gallery, located in Syracuse University’s Lubin House at 11 East 61st St., New York City. The exhibition was created to draw attention to the achievements of artists of excellence who have disabilities.
Each of the award winners receives a portion of a $60,000 per year allotment from the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation, featuring a variety of works including site specific installation, video art, works on paper, drawings, and acrylic and spray paint paintings. The 2018 grant winners include Amy Stacey Curtis, B.D. White, Beverly Baker, Gregory Blackstock, Helen Rae, Myasia Dowdell, Shannon Finnegan, and Sky Cubacub.
Nominees and winners of the Wynn Newhouse Awards are chosen by a committee, composed of persons respected in the arts and disabilities communities, who review all submissions. This group also decides how the grant money will be dispersed among the artists. The selection committee for this year’s awards was comprised of: Eve Biddle, Wassaic Project; Dustin Grell, Artist and 2016 Awardee; Shane Lavalette, Director, Light Work; and Valerie Rousseau, Curator, American Folk Art Museum.
