Hiding in Plain Sight

April 5 through May 13, 2018
Gallery Reception: Thurs, April 12, 2018

In an age where judgement is shaped by “alternative facts,” the artworks in Hiding in Plain Sight do not attempt to offer any absolute truths or solutions, because the truth is unimaginable.

Hiding in Plain Sight features the work of Syracuse University’s 2018 MFA candidates from the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ School of Art and Department of Transmedia. Spread out across several exhibition venues throughout Syracuse, the artworks in Hiding in Plain Sight represent the culmination of a three-year period of critical investigation and introspection, marked by a new, self-led shift toward interdisciplinary experimentation. The result is an array of artworks spanning a wide range of mediums and forms that, blur the boundaries between traditional modes of art-making, and through their process, material and staging, subvert our perception of reality.

Occupying the liminal spaces between the real and the imagined, the natural and the fabricated, the artworks in Hiding in Plain Sight suggest a mode of inconspicuous opposition: one which straddles both a position of offense and defense to challenge governing social and political systems, while ensuring undetectability. From immersive installations that toy with our sense of place, to performative objects that attempt to transcend their objecthood, the artworks in these exhibitions offer visitors a chance to ponder the unknown and rethink what they think they know.

Curated by Shehab Awad, the M.F.A. exhibition is divided among three Syracuse University exhibition spaces, and features thirty-one artists.  The participating venues include SUArt Galleries, Point of Contact Gallery, and Community Folk Art Center.
